Movie: Blood Diamond

This movie unveils the almost true tragedies behind diamond trade in Africa in 90s.

Although this trailer was edited in a Hollywood-entertaining way(explode, guns and fires, fighting and falling in love...), I didn't feel quite entertained after I got through the movie.
Maybe it's becuase the statement at the end: There are still 200,000 child soldiers in Africa.

The main idea of this film is the brutality of the rebel force in the civil war of Sierra Leone, and diamond trade just had everything to do with the conflict.

There are some true stories in the real world which are reflected by the movie plot

  • The civil war in Sierra Leone, 1991-2002 last 11 years, RUF with support from NPFL, been  trying to overthrow the Joseph Momoh government, left over 50,000 dead.
  • Revolutionary United Front(RUF), the rebel, they did do these things
    • Cut off the hands of captured soldiers. They amputated the hands, arms, and legs of tens of thousands.
    • Abducted children to become their sodiers. There were estimated 10,000 child soldiers thought to have participated in the conflict
    • Occupied diamond areas and oppressed slaves to mine for them.
  • Smuggling conflict diamonds(blood diamonds) from the sources to Liberia is true, and it still happens today.
  • The conference in end of the film refers to an actual meeting that took place in Kimberley, South Africa in 2000
  • Kimberley Proccess is a real initiative that aims to stem the flow of conflict diamonds

Now, if you are really dying to have a lifetime diamond of yourself, please, according to Kimberly Process FAQ, ask your jewellers these questions
  • How can I be sure your jewellery does not contain conflict diamonds?
  • Do your diamond suppliers participate in the industry’s ‘System of Warranties’?
  • Can I see a copy of your company’s policy on conflict diamonds?

The Participants World Map of Kimberley Proccess, my dear Taiwanese fellows please take a look at the NOTE at the bottom. Yeah, yeah, that's good of us, huh~
