What you can do

  1. Recycle
    • Put separate containers next to your trash can, each for bottles, cans, paper, whatever
  2. Turn off the lights
    • Turn of lights in the daytime or when you are leaving for a long while
  3. Make the switch (of your light bulbs)
    • Replace incandescent bulbs with CFL or LED ones
  4. Turn on the tap
    • Stop drinking bottled water, they are not better and cost you much
    • Find a way to purify tap water
  5. Turn down the heat
    • Turn down your thermostat or use a programmable thermostat
  6. Support food recovery programs
    • Encourage your local restaurants and grocery stores to partner with food rescue organization
    • Donate any non-perishable canned and dried foods
  7. Buy local
    • Go to farmers markets or local farms for your products, eggs, dairy and meat
  8. Get out and ride
    • Use your city's bike share programto run short errands and commute to work
    • Ride on the bike lane or trail if there are ones
  9. Share a car
    • Join a car share program
  10. Plant a garden
    • Plant some lettuce in the window box
  11. Compost
    • Learn how to compost at HowToCompost.org and then practice
  12. Reduce your meat consumption
    • Progressively cut down on the amount of meat you consume week by week, or month by month
